Meaning Bracelets: This a fun activity that is highly personalizable to suit a client’s needs and is easily modified for individual, family or group settings.

  • Provide the client with multi-colored materials (ex. beads, thread, etc.)
  • Assign, or have the client assign, meaning to each color (ex. colors could represent strengths, experiences, affirmations, values, motivations, loved ones, goals, etc.) For bracelets with multiple beads of each color, have each color represent a category.
  • Have the client make the bracelet and discuss the significance of each bead that is added.
  • The client can look at their bracelet when they need reminding of “xyz.”
  • In a group/family therapy variation, each member passes their bracelet around as others add beads representing strengths and positive traits they recognize in that person.
  • For more gender-neutral bracelets you could use multiple shades of leather/hemp (ex. black, brown, tan) and different shaped beads (or studs) to ascribe meaning to rather than the color (see below).
